Current Projects

Drawing on research in multilingual education, applied linguistics, and African sociolinguistics, this project frames translanguaging as a dynamic, relational practice through which teachers and learners draw on their full linguistic repertoires to construct meaning, access knowledge, and negotiate identity in formal learning environments. Focusing on Kenya as a paradigmatic multilingual context, the study examines the country’s complex linguistic ecology, the evolution of its language-in-education policies, and the persistent gap between official prescriptions and classroom practices. The research demonstrates that Kenyan schools operate as de facto translanguaging spaces, where English, Swahili, and local languages are routinely interwoven despite monoglossic policy frameworks.

This project originated from a collaborative visit to the Phonetic Laboratory at the University of Cologne, funded by the World Academy of Sciences and DFG. The research focuses on the analysis of Kenyan English and Swahili, with plans to extend to other languages among the more than 60 indigenous languages spoken in Kenya. The research explores how Kenyan English intonation and other prosodic features are shaped by the multilingual repertoires of speakers, shedding light on the interplay between language contact, phonetic variation, and sociolinguistic identity.
