• Cognitive Contact Linguistics
  Research on language contact from a cognitive perspective has been neglected despite the omnipresence of linguistic contact situations. This project addresses questions of language contact research from a cognitive perspective. The focus is on four key topics that can be examined within a cognitive framework: manifestations of language contact in language processing and production, contact-induced language change at different linguistic levels, contact-induced variation in discourse and conversation, and the combination of a social and cognitive perspective in the analysis of loan processes and their linguistic effects. Using four case studies, this project shows possible methodological approaches for the synergy of language contact and cognitive research, which may serve as impulses for future studies.
• The Language of Love and Hate in English, German and French: A Cognitive-Contrastive Approach
  Semantic innovation and variation are typical features of an evolving language. They are often a result of changes and developments in our world which require new concepts and meanings. The aim of this project is to analyse the interplay of meaning, context and the mind from a historical perspective, using the example of the semantic representation of two opposing emotion concepts, namely ‘love’ versus ‘hate.’ This includes identifying changes in their semantic representation that reflect changing culturally embedded perceptions and attitudes. In addition, the study investigates the conceptualization of the two emotion concepts from a contrastive perspective. It explores variations not only among international varieties of English (mostly British and American English) but also between English and other languages, including German and French.

• “We are all human!” - Analyses of linguistic constructions of outgroup-ingroup identities in migrant discourses in Germany and Great Britain
  This project explores the linguistic manifestations of encounters with prejudice, inequality, and discrimination in the discourse of migrants in Germany and Great Britain. It contributes to migration discourse research by focusing on the perspectives of migrants, which have often been neglected. Through qualitative interviews, the study highlights key factors that motivate the construction of an in-group and out-group identity and examines the linguistic and emotional aspects involved. The main research questions include:
  - How do personal or media confrontations with prejudice and discrimination affect the discourse of migrants? 
  - What emotions are triggered by these confrontations, and how are they manifested in discourse?
  - How is the in-group and out-group identity constructed linguistically, and what strategies are used?
  The study employs Hart’s (2010) discourse-ethnographic approach from Critical Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Science. Overall, it seeks to understand the impact of prejudice and discrimination on migrant discourse and highlights the importance of giving migrants a voice in these discussions. It shows that anti-immigration discourses of the host society, motivated by reservations and fears, can trigger both emotional and cognitive reactions in migrants, which are expressed through various linguistic strategies, ranging from referential strategies and predications to metaphors.
